Individual Therapy

Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, is a process by which a person addresses and resolves their emotional problems.  Talk therapy gets its name from the treatment process, which is usually a structured conversation (talking!) between a therapist and a client.  Talk therapy has been around for over a hundred years and has grown from an art to an evidence-based practice that has allowed millions of people to overcome depression and anxiety, resolve painful past experiences, improve their interpersonal relationships, and change self-destructive patterns.  My clients range from adults to children as young as six years old, across a wide variety of races, genders, religions, and sexual orientations.

I have been trained in several specialties of therapy, including EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Cognitive and Behavioral Therap (including various subspecialties within that).

EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) are two cutting edge therapies that address and resolve the way painful memories and emotions are stored in our minds and bodies.

EMDR utilizes specific therapeutic techniques with bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or hand taps) to target past painful memories and allow their healthy reprocessing and integration, alleviating related symptoms, and decreasing distress when thinking about the memory.  SP focuses on targeting blocked body sensations, actions, and emotions that were initially prevented from being expressed and resolved successfully.  SP reduces symptoms by allowing these sensations, emotions, and actions to be completed with the safety and structure of a therapist.

EMDR and SP are both evidence-based treatments rooted in trauma therapy, cognitive therapy, mindfulness, attachment theory, somatic therapy, and neuroscience.  EMDR and SP can be used individually or in conjunction.  The average EMDR or SP session lasts 60-90 minutes, with sessions every week.

EMDR and SP can assist people suffering from the traumas of:

  • Childhood neglect

  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse

  • Serious car accidents

  • War and genocide

  • Violent crime

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Unresolved family-of-origin or interpersonal relationship issues

I am certified in EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level III).

Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most tried and tested therapies in America.  CBT focuses on the unhealthy ways in which we think (our cognitions) and act (our behaviors).  CBT is a teaching treatment, allowing clients to carry the skills learned into the future, long after therapy has ended.  CBT is highly structured, with average treatment duration being three months to one year.  The average CBT session lasts 45-55 minutes, with sessions once a week.

CBT has been proven effective in treating:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Traumas and Abuse (including PTSD)

  • Phobias

  • Stress and Adjustment Disorders

  • Relationship Issues

  • Non-Organic Insomnia

I am certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Insomnia Treatment (CBT-I).
